The medical establishment can go...

Ok, after reading numerous other pregnancy blogs, I'm SO glad we chose to have our baby with a midwife. Other blogs mention doctors appointments that are more like drive-bys - the poor women neve get a chance to ask a question because their feet are in the stirrups and when they sit up, the doctor is gone. Oy.

The appointment went well this morning. Urine, blood pressure, baby's heartbeat were all normal. They are starting to keep tabs on the position of the baby. I had thought that the baby's feet were wedged in my rib cage and its head was pointing down at an angle. I can feel the curvature of a back along the left side of my belly. However, as near as they could tell, I was completely wrong. It's likely shoulders in my rib cage and feet poking me further down. I was right about the back, though.

So, I now am going to be the recipient of daily accupressure (thank you, darling husband) treatments to my pinky toes to encourage the little one to settle in the head-down position. The midwife informed me today that, while we still have time and the baby still has lots of room to turn, they aren't permitted to deliver breech births. In fact, she said that she didn't know any doctors in Victoria who would deliver a breech - they all would do a C-section. Guess that explains why the Cesarian rate here is 36% (as compared to 28% in the rest of Canada). Women's bodies spend months getting ready for childbirth and the medical establishment is so afraid of lawsuits and so concerned with keeping laboring moms on their 24 hours timetable (if you haven't delivered within 24 hours in most places, they give you a C-section) - it's very frustrating.

There are a few doctors in Vancouver who will deliver breech babies the normal way - let's hope it doesn't come to that. Both Mark and I had a stern talk with the baby about turning head down. I felt VERY vigorous rolling movements about 10 minutes after he applied the seeds to the accupressure points. Maybe the kid was paying attention.
