I love our midwives

We have another midwife appointment today. We've started going every two weeks. I really like the two ladies (Heather and Lorna) at the practice we chose. We didn't do much research - just got lucky. They are both originally from Ontario and Heather is especially midwestern in the way she talks - too fast as though she's trying to make her mouth keep up with her thought process. I love it.

They are both very practical. We are scheduled in 45 minute time slots and most of the appointment is spent just talking about questions we have, symptoms I'm experiencing, what to expect, etc. Eventually, we listen to the baby's heartbeat and schedule the next appointment. Heather (we're seeing both of them since Lorna is scheduled for vacation right when the baby's due) doesn't even make me weight myself. It was pretty traumatic for someone who spent so much time on Weight Watchers to see the scale jumping up and up at first. My ballpark weight gain at this point is probably 30 lbs, but I haven't actually been on a scale in months. My rings and skirts still fit (under the belly, at least), so I figure I'm doing ok.

Lorna has a gift for telling it like it is. Early in the pregnancy, we were reading everything we could get our hands on, including the infamous What to Expect When You're Expecting. Most pregnancy books these days seem to be compilations of everything that could possibly go wrong. They have sections on every type of genetic defect and what will happen to your baby if you aren't getting enough vitamins. I often lie in bed on my back reading at night. Several books said that, after week 16, you shouldn't lie on your back because it might compress some blood vessels or something. I tried to read on my side, but it just wasn't always comfortable. I decided to ask Lorna at our next appointment. "That's crap," she said. "You'll feel discomfort from lying on your back long before it would harm the baby."

Update 2:12 pm - We rescheduled the midwife appt for Thurs AM as they were both still attending a birth.
